Season 2 – Siege of Bordrins Watch
On the way to Overlook the group disrupt an attack on an Elsir Consortium caravan and recover the strong box although all of the guards are lost. They secure the strongbox and continue their journey.
As they pass through the Shanty town on the outskirts of Overlook they are disgusted at the conditions. At the city gates they meet Captain Aerun, a pompous and officious man. They complete all of the entry paperwork and return the strongbox to the consortium for a credit note for Stonehouse Treasures. They were just beginning to negotiate a price for all of the “black arrow” weapons when one of the party offends Talgeth, the Halfling in charge.
Next they head to the Nine Bells and find the divine knot. Bush is horrified at the state of the temples and saddened to see many have closed in this nefarious area. They head to the Temple of the Raven Queen where Katya agrees a fee to restore life to Kartenix and return him to Brindol.
The group decide they should stay somewhere nice and go to the House of Sleep, the most expensive place in town, run by Kaleban. They help throw out a group of Lost Ones who were demanding more than the usual fee for protection in the City.
The evening turns into a banquet, at which the group meet The Freeriders, they are only here for the banquet and are staying elsewhere but they are good company and their leader Megan Swiftblade donates a magical dagger towards the cost of the resurrection for their noble actions.
Suddenly the atmosphere changes as the Far Striders enter. The group play on Sir Edgars ego and convince their mage, Jen, to disenchant the Freeriders dagger so that they can donate the residuum. Next morning in the Divine Knot they bump into a group of Lost One assassins murdering a fellow adventurer, they fight them off but one escapes, changing their appearance as they go. On the body of one of the assassins they find a hit list that includes them.
The party continued it’s journey to “treasures” where it made a deal with the proprietor for 675GP for all of the kit they had, that was stamped with the black arrow. Plus the party would get at least 30% of market value for anything they sold there in future.
During the transaction a comotion outside caught their attention. On investigation it seemed that everyone was being called to high hall as the council was out.
“As you arrive at the gates to the area in the City centre your papers are checked briefly and you step on to amazing cobbled streets. All around you are buildings of brick and marble, their carved facades showing stories of mighty battles, heroic dwarves and the end of the Age of Chains. Amongst the offices, residences and ministries mighty towers thrust into the air their tops overlooking the entire city.
Everywhere you look there are buildings and the smell of good street food is carried on the breeze. Adventures hustle onwards with you, past the courts, street vendors and charms sellers. The steady hum of conversation accompanies you, until, rising above all other buildings you can see Caer Overlook. A fortress of stone hauled out from the depths of the earth, from the very mines the Dwarves excavated during the dark days of their enslavement.
It consists of 8 towers surrounding a central keep with an enormous domed roof. Linking the towers, and between you and the keep, is a 200’ high stone wall. Carvings, engravings and bas-relief herald the hatred of the enemies of the dwarven race. You reach the gates. Captain Aerun in on duty.
You pass easily into the tapestried hallways, an inlaid stone floor beneath your feet and the alcoves filled with statues of those that gave their lives for freedom. But all this pales as you walk through the enormous stone doors and into the High Hall its self.
The room is enormous, 200’ in diameter with great dome above. A dias is raised 20’ above the echoing chamber and holds 5 high backed chairs, occupied by the Dwarven councillors.
They take the opportunity to talk with the Freeriders and warn Megan about the assassins, they agree to talk later.
The youngest male elder steps forwards.
Welcome to High Hall friends. I am Elder Cadrick. I don’t much see the point in bandying words, so I’ll lay it out for you. War is upon us. A great host of orcs comes from the west. Their intention is clear. They will come through the mountains bent on slaughter. Those they spare can look forward to a short life of slavery. Overlook, and Bordrin’s Watch in the mountains, have long held fast against these raids, but our scouts say never has such an army gathered. Thus, we turn to you brave souls to help defend not only Overlook, but also all the Elsir Vale.
When the orcs arrive, we’re certain they will come up through the pass. We know this because already there have been attacks from the tunnels below, compromising the fastness. The defenders have fought back the savages, but it’s clear the rest are coming and fast.
So here’s the plan. Durkik Forgeheart will lead the militias and most of you to bolster Bordrin’s Watch. Orc trailblazers infest the tunnels below, so we’ve tasked their security to the Farstriders. One more mission remains, though. We need a group to evacuate the monastery on the other side of the mountains. It’s dangerous work, what with the orcs and all, but priests need a warning of what’s coming if they don’t know already.
Do we have any volunteers?
The group volunteer and are offered 750GP. They turn it down in favour of a trip to the armoury which give them;
- +2 Longsword of Shared Wrath
- +2 Dwarven Plate Armour
- an upgrade from Brabbus’ dagger to +2
They also warn Cadrick about the assassins and he seems worried.
At the monestry they fight through groups of Orcs. The monastery is filled with dwarven corpses and the party fight down to the smelting tunnels below. They find Kalad, the last survivor and paladin of Moradin. He explains that he has blocked this entrance through the mountains but there are more, they all come together in a place called the nexus which can be flooded blocking all of the tunnels.
He leads the party through a labyrinth of vents to the Dwarven complex, more orcs are fought along with a Dark One, on the dark one’s body is a very unusual looking key around 6" long.
The bodies of the Far Striders are found, they had failed in their mission, the arrogant Sir Edgar defeated. On Jen’s body they find a stone of sending. In the nexus it’s self they meet Tusk, the warleader of the greeskins to the West and his Shadar-Kai lover Myrissa.
They defeat them and flood the nexus. Escaping through an escape hatch into Bordrins Watch where they watch the army turn and flee, defeated……..
